The Civil Procedure Code enacted in April 2018 provides for mediation in all civil matters at any stage of court proceedings. It has opened up new opportunities for dispute resolution careers to members of the legal profession in Rwanda. It means however, that lawyers must be able to realize the potential that mediation and mediation advocacy hold for their clients, dedicating time and other resources to gain the skills required to be an effective mediator or a good mediation advocate. The Rwandan Bar Association has committed to the development of the legal profession and therefore has undertaken a capacity building program in mediation and mediation advocacy skills in partnership with internationally recognized practitioners and pioneers of mediation worldwide.
In This Regards Edwards Mediation Academy in partnership with the Rwanda Bar Association organized an introduction to Mediation and mediation advocacy skills for 50 Advocates on 28th January 2019 which followed the next day on 29th January 2019 with the certificate award giving and closing ceremony of Mediation skills course to 27 Professional mediators (Advocates) and other in house lawyers from financial and insurance institution in Rwanda who The closing ceremony was attended by the Rwanda Bar Association President Julien Kavaruganda and Mediator Bruce Edwards himself the guest of honor during this ceremony was Hon Chief Justice Prof. Sam Rugege
Hon Chief Justice Prof. Sam Rugege said that “The civil procedures of 2018 Makes mediation possible in all kind of disputes. With this law mediation will be established in Rwanda.” He also told the Certified mediators that they did not have this opportunity to waste their precious time but to take the opportunity to establish reputation as a good mediator or lawyer in mediation.
